A study of a texture-based equation for estimating the saturated hydraulic conductivity of an alfisol in the sudan savannah ecological zone, Ghana*

Saturated hydraulic conductivities of Varempere series soils (plinthaqualf) located in the sudan savannah zone of Ghana were measured by the falling head method and compared with values estimated by the texture-based equation of Rawls et al. (1982). The comparisons indicated that saturated hydraulic conductivity values estimated using the texture-based equation could predict those measured within the same order of magnitude only for the coarse-textured soil. For the fine textured soils, the texture-based equation underestimated the measured values by approximately one order of magnitude. It was concluded that in modelling hydrological processes such as infiltration in coarse-textured soils, the use of the texture-based equation would be useful. However, for technical designs of irrigation and drainage systems that require more accurate information on saturated hydraulic conductivity, the use of the texture-based equation should be discouraged. Etude d'une équation à base de texture en vue d'évaluer la conduetivité hydraulique saturée d'un alfisol de la zone écologique de savanne soudanaise, Ghana Résumé Les conductivités hydrauliques saturées de la série de sols varempere (plinthaqualf) se trouvant dans la zone de savanne soudanaise du Ghana ont été mesurées à l'aide de la méthode de la chute de hauteur piézométrique et comparées avec les valeurs évaluées a l'aide de l'équation à base de texture de Rawls et al. (1982). Les comparaisons obtenues montrent que la valeur de la conduetivité hydraulique saturée évaluée à l'aide de l'équation à base de texture permet de prévoir celle qui a été mesurée avec le même ordre de grandeur. Mais cette prévision n'est valable que pour des sols à texture grossière. Pour ce qui est des terres à texture fine, l'équation à base de texture a sous-estimé la valeur mesurée d'un ordre de grandeur. Il a été conclu que l'équation à base de texture serait utile pour la modélisation des processus hydrologiques tels que l'infiltration dans des sols à texture grossière. Par contre l'emploi de l'équation à base de texture est à déconseiller pour la réalisation de projets de systèmes d'irrigation et d'écoulement des eaux qui exigent des informations plus précises sur la conduetivité hydraulique. * Paper presented at the International Workshop on Soil Water Balance in the Sudano-Sahelian Zone, Niamey, 18-23 February 1991.
